在介绍本片之前，首先需要讲点历史。墨丘利计划系美国最早的载人航天计划，首次载人航天飞行是在1961年5月5日。在这之前的两年时间里，美国宇航局多次试飞无人操作的墨丘利飞船。最后一次试飞是在1961年1月底，乘客是黑猩猩Ham，飞船飞越大西洋700公里。飞行过程中出现了几个小问题，但Ham死里逃生并在海上着陆。后来，美国宇航局就再也没有请Ham上飞船了。
